Elevators And Dining Table

My thoughts on power were of balance and equality. This is the elevator I designed for Obama. As you can see it reflects balance by itslef being balanced and one side being mirrored over onto the other side.

This time when I was thinking of balance
of power I was reminded of an old scale
where there are two gold plates to the
same rod that totters on a middle rod. And
I tried to translate that idea of to make things
equal you need to know how to balance yourself.

The dining table I designed also reflects balance and equality. In my table there can be up to 4 heads of the table as to promote that in fact no one is really the head of the table and that everyone is equal.

Here are my three elevator shots in UT. It is still a work in progress. I am liking the shape of it considering the pathways it is to travel along. But I still need to add to it I feel and make it better. I am considering making it a little larger, and altering the shape slightly so maybe it doesn't look like your average run of the mill elevator. I also included a couple of outside shots of what my spaces are shaping up to be. I just like the look of it right now and wanted to share it before it undoubtly changes to suit my needs.

Mash Up Power- Women:

If you percieved someone as powerful, they would become powerful. With the ability to push through ambitious plans and American's giving him leeway Barrack Obama as the president of the United States has never had more influence. A Clinton White House is engaged in an internal struggle over how to recover from devastating election losses and would be in disarray. Or would they? What if Hilary Clinton had incorporated Madonna's attitude into her own persona, such as a strong belief that women should be as powerful and domineering as men and that a woman should be free to express her opinions and sexual desires as a man does, without the fear of a backlash? Mirroring this opinion is Prada. A woman's sexuality is part of her power. Woman who look powerful are always on top. Bodies have the potential for exerting power and can be propelled to demonstrate this power through the institutions that are perceived by the public to be knowledgeable. This means that the society implicitly submits power and knowledge to institutions, in this case, the entertainment industry, and allows those involved in the business to inform the popular culture of their judgments (perceived by the public as knowledge) of what type of body is beautiful and what is fashionable. If Clinton had the magic of Miuccia Prada during the election last year perhaps the Republicans would not be reduced in numbers and engaged in an internal struggle. And be revelling in presidential power and influence unseen in Washington for decades. Not because of Obama but because of a powerful woman president.

My laboratories for both Alfred Nobel and Jacques-Yves Cousteau were inspired from quotes that dealt with in my mind the search for normal space. This concept has influenced my work in both the laboratories but in the meeting space. The meeting space is what you would consider a normal room, however, this is because this is the space that Nobel and Cousteau have been searching for. In Cousteau's case the laboratory space is not normal. The waterwall is to create the atmosphere of a tank or marine land and ramp beside it descends into a space with no consistency in its walls. Ascending back up into the meeting space Cousteau is being 'set free' from the marine land into normality. In Nobel's case the laboratory space is golden as knowledge is gold. Here the walls are only two colours to contrast against each other for similarites and differences. Using the ramp to get to the meeting space Nobel would notice the differences between the strength and power of the spaces compared to the delicateness of the ramp, and the difference between the spaces being inside and the ramp being outside. He would search for similarities in the normality of the meeting space. Together they both signify the normality of the search for human knowledge.

Jacques-Yves Cousteau Laboratory

Ascending down the ramp into Cousteau's laboratory next to a wall of water and heading towards the laboratory space.

A close-up showing the wall of water and the wall that features an interesting concept of what would be considered a normal wall. It both protudes out and continues inwards creating the question where is the wall actually placed.

I chose to place my medium texture here as it seems to draw in eye inwards. I thought that fit nicely in with this area as the surrounding blocks are placed to question the placement of the wall. It is searching for the similarities and differences in both inside and outside space.

Corridor- Second Meeting Space

My light texture has been applied to the floor of the second meeting place as it helps draw the eye towards the magnificently tall opening in the cliff face that is so powerful and creates the feeling of infinite spacious space which stirs an inferior feeling.

Alfred Nobel Laboratory

Lighting And Shadow

The Black Box, The Concealed Room. Chapter 5. The Shadow As Repetition. As the moon starts to disappear and the sun starts to rise, its morning twilight time. Shadows are long and light. They are more blue then black. You are walking along a path at an art gallery. On your right side a feature wall with intriguing square conical hollow shapes bursting out of the wall. Suddenly the clouds clear and the moon is bright in the sky again. You look to your left and you notice that the blank wall on your left is no longer blank. Light is being funneled down these protruding shapes on the right and projected onto the left. The wall becomes an art piece of its own now. Using projected light to repeat what should be shadows into beams of light is an innovative idea. When I see this I think of how it would be to walk through that space and what it would be like to have that atmosphere surrounding you. Underneath the stars still during twilight I would feel that the projection would feel as though they were stars against a wall. Especially if the holes in the conical shapes were smaller. The feeling you would get from this would be the feeling of never ending space, in a never ending universe. The feeling of never ending space is something I would like to explore with my design. While Erika probes this thought on an outwards visual plane, it would also be a compelling thought to twist that around and turn it inwards. In a lab I think a space that conveys the feeling of infinite space heading inwards would aid scientists with the philosophy behind theory.

This is the image of the inside of my model showing the space for Alfred Nobel. This explores his quote about similarities and differences and how all human knowledge is based upon our search for the two. It isn't really detailed but the simplicity expresses the similiarity and differences between sunk in walls and features coming out of the walls.

This is the axnometric drawing on which the inspiration for this space came from. As you can see it is the outside that has the detail in this sketch. However, as I was creating it I felt that it would be better if this detail was inside were you could actually experience it.

And to the right is the outside view of what it would look like. Although i'm not quite sure if that is in the cliff face or outside of the cliff face. Inside I hope.

These are my 18 axnometric drawings for our experiment 2. I used the quotes from Alfred Nobel and Jacques-Yves Cousteau to create them. It was interesting but actually a bit difficult to create intriguing spaces and drawings using only 3 rectangular prisms. But I still was able to create some interesting and some simple shapes.

I chose this view to represent what you would see if you were walking up towards the building to see the exhibition that either Rosalie Gascoigne or Fiona Hall. You can see that the top studios for Rosalie Gascoigne are joined by platforms on the outside at the same level, but not at the top and is hidden in the architecture through the blade walls I added to make it appear that the platforms blend in with the building and are meant to be part of the blade wall.

Broken

The above ground studio space is the space for the artist Rosalie Gascoigne. I chose the word broken to represent her work as she takes broken pieces of something the rest of us would consider garbage and makes it whole again. When I was considering the word broken I thought of barcodes for the reason that they seem to me to be a set of broken different sized lines. As you can see I tried to convey that into my buildings as having a set of 4 buildings in the front that are different sizes as well as different heights and then continue on with that in the exhibition space which is the back not attached as such to the 4 buildings. The exhibition space matches in shape to the front and flow of the entity.

Metallic

The below ground artist studio and space was created for Fiona Hall. It was inspired by the use of metal in her artwork to make something organic out of old tin sardine cans. When I was drawing sections of the word metallic I kept coming back to and thinking of a sword being driven into the ground. And this is what I attempted to do with my space. As you can see I have taken that idea and expanded it. I decided that one "sword" wouldn't be enough area and it would appear too alone. So I added three more "swords" although they are all different sizes. Then reflecting on the actual space that the artist would have to create pieces I needed to add another space in the back that linked into the exhibition space. This was adding a more practical approach to the studio.

I am quite disappointed in this picture right now because I am having a bit of trouble with the putting texture into the model, not just my own texture but actually onto some surfaces. It is a tad frustrating because I will chose the face I want to apply texture to and it won't do anything or texture another surface, or my favourite will be if it already has a texture on it and I want to change it will sometimes change right back to gray and I simply won't be able to put any texture on it. I don't know what is going on but I hope it is resolved before Thursday. Anyways.

This is my second sketch up model including the two sets of stairs, which has turned into eight sets of stairs in order to accommodate the four different buildings that create the artist studios. The studios are in a different set of buildings then the exhibition space which is glass building in the back to let in the natural light, and to seperate the working space from the show space. The above ground space represents the word broken from Rosalie Gascoigne's art and the below ground represents metallic for Fiona Hall's art.

These are my sections for the second SketchUp Model. The top two sections are for the set of stairs to go from below ground to ground level. You will note that I have changed them once I had my model done in Sketch Up to better suit what I actually had. The bottom two sections are for the set of stairs that goes from ground level to above ground.

Stair Sections Not Used In Model

These are the sections of stairs that would be placed in my first model. The first drawings would be used to go from below ground to ground level. They would be in there own stairwell and would almost act as there own artpiece. The steps comprise of triangle pieces cantilevered into the different sides of the stairwell as you are going up. The second set of sections are for going to from the upper level to the ground level and they curve around a central column so that when you either go up or down the stairs you have a nearly 360 degree view around the exhibition area.

Fiona Hall

Fiona Hall's art piece Nelumbo nucifera; nelum (Sinhala); thamareri (Tamil); lotus, 1999 is made from Aluminium & steel. She has taken old sardine cans and carefully cut them open to leave them half open. She then carved and engraved steel into looking like a lotus. She then filigreeds- which means A form of ornamentation, usually formed by gold or silver twisted wire, this on top of the sardine tins.

Rosalie Gascoigne

Rosalie Gascoigne's artwork Lily pad is made of linoleum and plywood she found from in a garbage tip. She often found the materials for other pieces of her artwork at the tip. Lily pad was then created like all her pieces by rearranging and assembling all the pieces. Although in none of my research that I did, did it say that she affixed these pieces to anything I am going to assume that she did.

And this is where it came from. The Metallic is the top left hand corner above ground sketch. Thinking about metallic I was reminded of those dome monkey bar jungle gym structures from childhood and tried to express that through the section. Didn't quite come out as that but I thought it made a interesting shape and an interesting space. The second from the top on the right hand side and represents the section of broken underground. I expressed it as though the ground was broken up by underground boxes.

Personal Pictures

Having graduated from high school in June 2006, which was nearly three years ago, and as well as moving across the world to come to university I honestly can say that I do not have any work that I had ever completed from high school. Although a knitted scarf is not "creative" as such, the creative part is my genius idea that it is the only thing I have made in high school. In fact, it was the first thing I had ever knitted in full, and without(or nearly) mistakes. Unfortunately it is more crafty than creative, but I am still immensly proud of it! Hope you overlook that 'small' interpretation.

The building to the right is a unique piece of architecture is many ways. Firstly it is entirely made of a truly renewable resource in that every winter it is made completly of snow and every spring the snow melts and the whole process of building it starts again. Also, the outside doesn't look to remarkable in the pictures but the inside is almost entirely made of ice as well, even including the beds. Then of course there is the fact that it is made of ice, you can't really overlook that fact too much, as it is literally a igloo hotel. My original picture is from a place 30 minutes from my hometown called the Carberry Sandhills. A few friends and myself had gone hiking after dinner there one night and just exited out of slightly forested area onto a set of huge sand dunes just at twilight. The sunset that night was just so beautiful that we had to stop and watch it go down before we could continue hiking. This is just one of the amazing pictures that we took of it that night.
